The heart and soul of the NoteWindow System is the ability to store hundreds of completely unstructured, free-format Notes and then instantly locate the note containing the specific information you are after. This is accomplished by the "instantaneous" scanning of the content of every note in your Active Stack of notes Character-for-character as you type a search string. Using this top portion of the Control Panel.

Your notes may be of any length you wish, from a few character to many pages. As you type your search string each note not containing that string is dynamically eliminated from the visible list of "candidate" notes displayed on-screen AS YOU TYPE!

Subset/Compound/AND Searches
You may perform "Searches Within Searches" and Compound/AND searches by using the "ENTER" key following each successive search string. Your next search then will continue within just those notes that matched the subsets created by previous searches in the process.

For example, typing:
tom[ENTER]
dick[ENTER]
harry

will first display the subset of every note containing "tom". Then hitting "ENTER" will allow a search within only those notes and display only those also containing "dick" and then hitting "ENTER" again will allows a search within that set of notes for all those containing "harry".

The order in which the terms are entered has no effect on the final result, except that it is the last search string entered that will appear "hilited" in the note displays. If you wish to hilite a particular string in the final Search Results Displays of the notes, just enter that term as the last term, or optionally enter any of the terms an additional time to make that term the hilited string in the view of each remaining (matching) Note.

The Search History Section will display all "Saved" search terms for the current Stack. Those terms may be selected to be instantly used for the current Search. You may use the "&" for Compound Searches. You may also enter "Detete" and "Rearrange" Modes to cleanup the list of saved terms.
Stack and Search Information

This section contains the Active Stack Name and whether it is an encrypted Stack. Additionally, the number of Notes in the stack is shown. As searches are performed, the counter changes to show the number of Notes in the Stack that still match the Search being conducted.

This opens a new Blank Note to be created and stored on the top of the currently Active Stack. You can rearrange the order of your notes using controls on the Note management screens and menus used for editing note content and display.

You might have any number of "specific topic" Stacks and perhaps a few more "general" ones. There is no system limit on the number of Stacks, Notes, or the individual Note sizes. There is not one magic formula that satisfies all requirements. You will be able to find a system that works as you gain experience using the system on your specific devices for your specific needs.

This selector will open a small menu that allows you to select the Note text size along with the Note text and background color combination to be used for non-hilited Notes.

This Toggle Control Pair change the Note displays between:
Black Text on a White Background
and
White Text on a Black Background

These controls allow you to change the height and width of the item content displayed in the home panel. This is very useful for mobile devices of varying width as well as Notes having particular characteristics. This setting is not maintained permanently with the Stack so each time a Stack is Activated it will initially appear at the default settings.

    These are a click-to-toggle search-mode control pair:

You may "group" your Notes easily by simply including arbitrary "Association Tags" of your own choosing anywhere in the bodies of associated notes. For example, if you have a number of notes that apply to medical information, you might include the string "#med" somewhere in the body of every "medical" note. Then doing a search for the string #med will instantly show all notes that you have tagged as related to "medical" information.

TIP: Use multiple tags within notes to create instant n-dimensional "tree-style" search-result displays.

    Anywhere
  • This is the normal search mode, where a note remains in the "Match" list as long as the search string is found ANYWHERE in the note.

  • Char 1
  • Using the "Char 1" option, a Note will only match only if it matches the search string starting at the very first character in the Note. This is an especially nice feature for touchscreen devices by tagging key notes at the fist character of the note.

You may toggle this pair as well as the other toggle pairs at any time, including after you have entered a search string. Toggling will instantly change the display of matching notes to the alternate "search mode" you have toggled.

    These are a click-to-toggle search-mode control pair:

    A= a & A

  • This is the normal search mode, and the one that you will probably use 95% of the time. Upper and lower case are completely ignored in determining successful matches. For example, searching for the string "jack" will match "Jack" and also "jack" found in a Note. Likewise, a search for the string "NoteWindow" would match "Notewindow" "notewindow" and "NoTEwiNDow"

  • A=A Only
  • For a successful match, the search string must match the Note content character-for-character, including upper/lower case. The string "bill" will not match "Bill".
  • You may toggle this pair as well as the other toggle pairs at any time, including after you have entered a search string. Toggling will instantly change the display of matching notes to the alternate "search mode" you have toggled.

    These are a click-to-toggle search-mode control pair:

    Hide

  • This is the "normal" search mode, and the one that you will probably use 95% of the time. In this mode, as you type, all notes which do not match your search terms are removed from the display.

  • Mask
  • In this mode all notes in the current Stack will remain visible, but the notes that do not contain matches for your search will be dimmed. This means that the "Mask" mode may also be used as a "Do Not Match" since the masked notes will be those that do NOT contain the most recent search term.
  • You may toggle this pair as well as the other toggle pairs at any time, including after you have entered a search string. Toggling will instantly change the display of matching notes to the alternate "search mode" you have toggled.

This will bring up the Primary Program Menu containing two main sections:

P r o g r a m     C o n t r o l
Provides a number of Program-wide settings and modes, including selecting "Big Button" mode for troublesome touchscreen devices. Also included is the ability to remove all Notewindow data stored on the current device. This can be very useful to erase your data after having used a device other than your own to access your Stacks.
S t a c k     C o n t r o ll
Provides for choices dealing with your Note Stacks. You may have as many Stacks as you like. You "activate" any given Stack, meaning that it is loaded, open and the notes contained in that stack are all available for viewing, searching, updating and so on. The Stack Actions Menu offers selections for such things as:
- Creating New Stacks
- Activating Current Stacks
- Saving and Restoring Stacks
- Encrypting Stacks, and much more.

Calendar Stack Selectors
This group of selectors will appear only when you are viewing a Calendar Stack which was based upon a Calendar Template loaded using the "Load Demo or Template Stack" Main Menu selection.
  • "JAN-DEC" display any particular month,
  • " ↑ ↓ " Change the height of individual entries,
  • "Day" & "Week" change the display width from one day to one week,
  • "Menu" toggles the primary Stack Selectors for Stack switching and other Stack display actions.
In Calendar stacks you should not normally add or delete notes since that will corrupt the 7-wide display, although you may add an entire new row of 7 Notes if so desired. If you inadvertently delete a Calendar Note you may reinsert at the proper position by creating a new note and using the "More Actions" selector to move that note to the appropriate position in the Calendar Stack. Be sure to add the appropriate *XXX tag at the beginning of that Note.
While using NoteWindow, do not use the browser "Back" button/arrow.
Always use the NoteWindow "Close" "Back" or other navigation controls.
You have entered Info Mode
To help you get started exploring NoteWindow NoteManager this mode allows you to select any of the areas in the pink background above and receive a bit of an introduction.

Choose as many areas or buttons as you wish.

Use the i above at any time to return to normal program operation.

After you revert back to normal mode you will see additional indicators on various menus which will also provide information about using many more NoteWindow features.

You will find it helpful to use the "Menus/Stack Actions/Load a Demo Stack" menu selections to load a small demonstration Note Stack that you can try out and see many features first hand.
